An understory tree from eastern to central United States with simple, ovate, non-toothed, and opposite leaves. Grows from 10 to 30 feet tall, and has purple-white flowers. Trunk may be checkered and dark with green or purple twigs or branchlets. It flowers from April to June, and fruits grow from August to November
The bark can be made into a tea or tincture for Malaria or Diarrhea, can be used as poultice for external sores and ulcers.
